Dental sealants act as a barrier to protect teeth against decay-causing bacteria. They are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay most often occurs.
Although brushing and flossing help to remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth, the bristles cannot reach into the depressions and grooves of the back teeth to extract food and plaque.
Sealants protect these vulnerable areas and hold up well under the force of normal chewing. More frequently applied to a child’s teeth, adults also benefit from this protection. Sealants usually last for several years before a reapplication is needed. During your regular dental visits, we will check the condition of your sealants and reapply them as necessary.
